He smiled up at his partner. "Yeah, I will. I was just thinkin'." "About the case?" she finished for him. "Yeah. I know she did horrible things, but I just can't help but feel sorry for Amanda Finch." "Mulder, she cut off people's lips." "I know. But she did it all because she just wanted to be kissed. I mean she was thirty-eight, my age, Scully, and she had never even been kissed. Don't you think that's kind of, I don't know... sad?" "Yeah, I guess it is. But it still doesn't give her the right..." "I know. But it's still..." "Sad." Scully began to gather her things. "Mulder, I'm gonna head off now. You should too." He nodded in agreement. "Scully," he said, causing her to turn before she walked out the door. "How old were you when you had your first kiss?" She took a few steps toward him and set her things down on the chair opposite his desk. "You wanna hear about my first kiss, Mulder?" He smiled sheepishly. "You willing to tell?" "Maybe," she answered coyly, walking around to his side of the desk and sitting on it almost opposite of him. "But only if you share too." "Okay then. You show me yours and I'll show you mine... So how old were you, Scully? Fourteen? Fifteen?" "I was nine." "Nine?!" "You wanna hear this story, Mulder?" He nodded. "Then shut up and let me tell it." "Alright, Ms. Scully. Do tell." "It was the day after Christmas when I was nine, so that would have made it... 1973. We had spent Christmas that year with Uncle Jim, who wasn't really my uncle, but Ahab's best friend. We kids just called him Uncle Jim. I don't remember exactly where we were staying, except that it was in New England and there was snow, which was just unbelievable to my brothers and sister and I, because we had mainly lived in California at that point, and there just isn't snow there. So, we all wanted to be outside. "Uncle Jim had two boys, Kyle, who was thirteen, and Caleb, who was ten. Missy was twelve at the time, and already very into boys. Needless to say, she and Kyle hit it off and were inseparable the whole time we were there. Bill was eleven, so he and Caleb played together and they let Charlie, who was eight, tag along. However, they wouldn't let me play with them. They said they didn't need a girl hanging around and spoiling their fun. Since Missy and Kyle made it obvious they didn't want company, I was on my own. I was mad about it, but I was never the type to cry to Mom and Ahab about things, so I just went off by myself. "I was walking in the wooded area behind the house when I came across this boy sitting alone on a stump crying. He was older than me, about Missy's age I guessed, so I really wondered why he was crying. I almost never cried, and he was older and a boy so I figured something must really be wrong for him to be. I just watched him for a few minutes, but then he noticed me. I almost ran away, but he looked so sad that I decided to talk to him 'Hi,' I said. 'Hi,' he answered back, sniffling, trying to hide his tears from me, but failing miserably. I sat down on the stump with him and we didn't say anything for a couple of minutes. Finally I broke the silence and asked, 'why were you crying?' He looked really embarrassed and answered, 'just because I'm sad.' 'Oh,' I answered. After a moment I tried again. 'Why are you sad?' 'I don't want to talk about it,' he replied. We sat in silence again for another couple of minutes. Then he asked, 'why are you out here alone?' 'Because my sister's off with her boyfriend and my brothers don't want a girl hanging around,' I answered. 'Why are you by yourself?' I asked him. 'I just wanted to be alone,' he replied. 'Oh,' I said. 'I can leave if you want.' He stopped me. 'I don't mind you here,' he said. I didn't know what to say after that, but luckily, he continued the conversation. 'You're not from around here?' he questioned. 'No,' I answered. 'We're visiting my dad's friend.' 'Oh,' he responded. 'That's why I've never seen you before. So, how old are you?' I knew he was older and I didn't want him to think I was a baby, so I lied about my age. 'Eleven,' I told him. 'Really?' he asked, surprised. 'You look a lot younger. I though you were closer to my sister's age.' 'How old is she?' I asked. He looked like he might cry again when he answered, 'eight.' We just looked at each other for a minute. Then I asked very softly, 'why isn't she here with you?' He looked down at me and answered even softer, 'she's gone.' I just looked up at him for a moment and he looked down at me with tears in his eyes and slowly our faces drifted closer together and we kissed. It was soft and sweet and very innocent - a perfect first kiss. After I don't know how long, we broke apart and looked away from each other and there was a bit of an awkward moment. I was so shocked that I'd just had my first kiss with a boy I'd never even met before that I got up and told him that I had to go. 'My mom's probably worried about me,' I said. 'I've been gone too long.' He looked sad that I was leaving, and when I was a few steps away from him, he called out, 'what's your name? You never told me your name.' I was afraid Kyle or Caleb knew him and it would somehow get back to Mom and Ahab that I had kissed a boy in the woods and they would be mad, so I lied about my name..." "Katie." Scully was startled by her partner's interruption. "What?" "You told the boy your name was Katie." "But Mulder, how... You couldn't know that unless... unless..." "Unless I was the boy you met in the woods that day." "But that's... impossible. I mean, what are the odds... All these years, Mulder. Why didn't you tell me before now?" "Because I didn't know, Scully." "But you have an eidetic memory, Mulder. You had to have recognized..." "You don't exactly look the same as you did when you were nine, Scully. I had no idea until you started telling the story of your first kiss and it was the same as mine. And besides, until just a few minutes ago I thought my first kiss was with an eleven-year-old named Katie, not a nine-year-old named Dana." "Wow. I'm sorry I lied to you then. This is just unbelievable that it would be you. That twenty years later the man I'm assigned to work with would be that same little boy I met in the woods." "I know. Ya wanna know a secret, Scully?" "Okay..." "I liked you right away, despite the fact you were sent to spy on me, because you reminded me of that little girl who kissed me in the woods and made me feel better about Samantha for just a few minutes. Who knew it was the same girl all grown up?" Scully smiled a little and looked down. The agents sat in silence for a minute not knowing how to continue. "Hey, Scully," Mulder said, breaking the awkward quiet. "Wanna try for a second kiss?" Author's Note: For any of you that are following my WIP Suspicious Minds, I haven't given up on it. Part 10 should be coming soon. First Kiss was just a brief interlude to get the creative juices flowing again. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.
