Dana's prom date ends up ditching her, but her best friend Samantha has a solution. Alternate universe. Pre-XF story Hi Guys! This is a bit of whimsy I cooked up when I was packed into a small hotel room with no cable, and the only music I could get with the radio was country. There's VERY slight Pilot spoilers, but I wouldn't worry about it. Fox, 1013, and all the other companies: Fox, Dana, Phoebe, Cancer Man, and Langly are yours. If I had control of them, Mulder and Scully would be married, as well as Phoebe and Cancerman.. and Langly would be performing 24 hour surveillance on Val Kilmer. BTW: If anyone doesn't approve to me ripping on Phoebe - seek help. This is dedicated to Kris, Andy, and Joe.. my lone gunmen. Thanx guys! Prom Night_____________________________________________ The phone rang in the Mulder household. "I'll get it!" Sam called as she thundered down the stairs. She grabbed the receiver. "Hello?" Fox rolled his eyes at his younger sister. "Oh, Hi Dana. Wanna come over? I just got the new Teen Girl. Great.. see ya in 5...." hanging up the phone, Sam faced her brother. "You have to promise not to annoy Dana... just because she doesn't buy into your wacko theories..." Sam trailed off. "My theories are *not* wacko." Fox scowled, returning his attention to a paperback copy of War of the Worlds. "Whatever." Sam said dismissively as she searched for her magazine. The doorbell rang, and she called "Fox, can you get the door?" He shot a look at his sister, who was presently halfway inside a cupboard, and went to the door. He opened it. Dana was slightly surprised to see Sam's brother instead of Sam, but not displeased. She kinda thought Fox was nice, no matter what Sam said. Fox looked at the petite redhead in front of him. Dana had always been a bit on the quiet side, except for the times where she just had to point out some scientific inaccuracy about one of his theories. Sam walked into the hallway just in time to see her best friend and her older brother staring at each other. She grinned. "Come on in, Dana." Dana stepped inside, shrugging off her coat. She smiled at Sam who immediately towed her up the stairs and into her room. XXXXXXXXX "Ok, Dana....Number three..." Dana looked up from her nails, which she was painting fire engine red at the moment. "Would you get a tattoo?" "Ich. No." she shook her head emphatically. "Would you?" "I dunno.. maybe... Number 4." "Sam, I'm going over to Langly's house, okay?" Fox poked his head in. "Why don't you even call him Vince? That *is* his name." Sam asked prettily. "I don't know." Fox said exasperated. "I'll see you later." he shut the door. "Jerk." Sam said to the door. "You mean Fox?" Dana questioned. "Yeah, don't you think so?" Sam looked at her best friend with interest. "I guess. I like him more than *my* brothers." Dana laughed. "Of course you would." Sam snickered. Dana rolled her eyes. "Oh, did you hear about Phoebe's new boyfriend?" "Oh?" Sam rolled over onto her stomach. "Who's Miss Green going out with now?" "I don't know his name but you should see him. He's REALLY old, and he smokes." Dana smirked. It was common knowledge that Phoebe and Dana were not the best of friends. "Figures." Sam said quickly. "So Dana, has Ed asked you to the prom yet?" "Yeah, he cornered me at my locker. I swear Ed has all the romance of a worm." Dana laughed. She and Ed had been good friends, and she had heard all the rumors that he liked her. "So nobody's perfect." Sam said absently. "Mike has this annoying habit of chomping on his nails. It drives me up the wall." Dana laughed. She really couldn't wait for the prom, she had never been much for dances, but this *was* her senior prom. She just hoped that everything would go smoothly. XXXXXXXXXX The next week: Prom Night "Where is he?" Dana demanded, pacing back and forth across the living room. She stopped in front of Sam, who gave her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Dana. I'm sure Ed just got caught in traffic. Almost everyone is out tonight." she said sensibly. "I guess you're right." Dana smoothed out a small wrinkle in her dark green velvet gown. It showed off her auburn hair to perfection. Sitting down on the couch beside her best friend, she looked at the clock again. 15 minutes later. "He's not coming." Dana said, with a surprising calmness. "I should have expected it." Sam's face fell. She knew Dana really needed this date. Phoebe and her friends had been circulating rumors about the "Ice Queen" who'd never been kissed in her life. Then she got an idea. "Give me five minutes." Dana saw her friend's mischievous smile. "Samantha Mulder, you better tell me what your up to." Sam ran up the stairs. She called back. "I'm fixing things." Dana sat back down, and glanced at mike. He looked totally confused also. XXXXXXXXXX Sam knocked softly on the door, and waited. "No one in here but New York State's least wanted." a voice called. Sam shook her head and walked through the door. Inside her brother was sitting at his desk, going over a psychology textbook. "Fox, I have to ask you for a favor." Sam said nervously. "What is it *now*?" he sighed, looking at his sister. "Nice dress." "Thanks. Now, will you take Dana to the prom?" she decided that there was no other way around it. "What?" Fox had always thought Sam's friend was pretty nice. At least she wasn't some airhead tat his sister usually befriended. "Will you take Dana Scully to her senior prom?" Sam asked again, talking very slowly. "I don't see why-" he was cut off. "I'll take that as a yes." Sam said, exiting the room. "Oh, and wear your gray suit." she called over her shoulder. XXXXXXXXXX Dana was still sitting on the couch when Sam came back down. "All fixed." she chirped happily, jumping down off the last two steps. Dana rolled her eyes. "Please, please, don't let this be too embarrassing." "Don't worry, Dana. Everything is going to be perfect." Just then Sam's and Dana's parents came into the room with corsages and cameras. Mrs. Scully was about to snag a group shot, when a voice spoke up. "Aren't I supposed in this too?" Dana whipped her head around to see Fox standing there, grinning. Sam giggled happily. "May I have the pleasure of escorting Miss Dana to her senior prom?" he asked, taking her hand and bowing deeply. Dana was so taken aback by his gallantly, all she could was nod. The parents looked at each other curiously, but said nothing. The group left a couple minutes later. XXXXXXXXXX The prom was going well. Sam and Dana had hooked up with some of their other friends, and Fox and Mike found that they had a lot in common. Things suddenly took a nosedive when Ed finally decided to show up. The first person to see him was the girl, Katie, sitting across the table. She slowly spoke up. "Uhh, Dana I wouldn't look now, but a certain someone has come in." Dana tossed a glance over her shoulder, expecting it to be Kris, Katie's boyfriend. Instead she saw Ed.... with Phoebe hanging all over him. She slowly got up, saying nothing. "Dana, if you want me to come with you..." Sam trailed off. "No Sam, this is something I have to do for myself." Dana said as she walked toward the couple. "Dana, hi." Ed said nervously when he saw her approaching. "Ed, may I remind you that you asked *me* to the prom last Thursday?" Dana said icily. "I did, but things, uh, kinda got messed up, I hope you understand." "Oh, I do now, you lying piece of trash." she spat. As Ed and Phoebe walked away, Dana saw her mouth the words 'Ice Queen'. Dana lost it. She ran out of the school, hoping nobody else saw her. She sat down on one of the benches that lined the school's garden. She just couldn't believe that Ed had ditched her... and for Phoebe. "Is this seat taken?" a masculine voice inquired. Dana looked up and saw her 'date' standing next to her. "No." He sat down. "What's going on, Dana?" "It's nothing, but I'm sorry I'm being such an awful date." she said miserable. "Don't worry about it. Now, are you going to tell me what is going on?" "The guy that walked in a few minutes ago was Ed, the guy that just ditched me, and the girl with him was Phoebe, who-" He held up a hand. "You don't have to explain about Phoebe. I've had the misfortune of meeting her once already." Dana said nothing, just raised an eyebrow curiously. "Listen, I've got an idea." he said, grinning. "Oh?" she looked interested. "Yeah, I've been waiting awhile to tell Phoebe off for something that happened." he helped her stand up. "Now, we are going to go back in there and show Ed and Phoebe a thing or two, okay?" "Sounds great." Dana said, really smiling for the first time that night. XXXXXXXXXX Sam breathed a sigh of relief when her best friend and her brother reappeared. She really wanted this to go perfectly. Asking Fox at the last minute had been a stroke of genius, though. They looked perfect together- if you ignored the fact that Fox towered over Dana by a good five inches. She was about to go up and ask them what had happened, but she saw her brother leading Dana to the dance floor. 'This is an interesting turn of events' she thought to herself. Sam wasn't the only person observing the couple dancing. Across the room, Phoebe sat, silently seething. 'It's not fair' she thought 'The Ice Queen gets Fox, while I'm here, stuck with Ed.' She had met Fox earlier in the year while they had been taking the same psychology course. Dana couldn't believe this was happening. She had never been the center of attention before, but now as Fox was leading her in circles around everyone else, she could feel everyone looking at them. "Everyone is watching us." she whispered quickly. "And you object to that?" he asked humorously. "No.... I'm just not used to it." she answered honestly. He put on a pained look. "Don't tell me that the beautiful Dana Scully doesn't have guys following her around every day.." Dana laughed. She was really beginning to like Fox, no matter what Sam said about him. She was about to say something, but was cut off when an all to familiar voice trilled. "May I cut in?" Phoebe waited impatiently for an answer. "No, you may not." Fox said, giving her a cold look. "Tough luck Phoebe, I see that your 'date' has found someone else." he gestured to Ed dancing with another girl. "Why you-" she hissed. "Now, Now, let's not resort to name calling." he chided. Enraged, Phoebe spun on her heel and stalked away. Dana finally got the nerve to speak up. "Thank You." "Why?" he looked down at her. "For what you said to Phoebe, for... everything. I know your idea of a good time is not escorting your sister's friends to their proms." "Oh, are you kidding? I do this all the time." he joked. She was beginning to appreciate his sense of humor too. The night passed much to quickly for Dana's taste. Soon they were back on her front porch, after they had dropped of Sam and her date. "I can't tank you enough." Dana said shyly. "You don't need to thank me for anything" Fox contradicted. "I got to spend an evening with a gorgeous lady. I'd say that would be more of a privilege." They talked for a few more minutes, and then Dana had to go. "I had a wonderful time." "So did I." Fox leaned down and kissed Dana softly on the lips. She was more surprised than anything else, but didn't fight him. "Good Night." she said, once he stepped away. Then she disappeared through the door. Fox turned around and began to walk home, being a lot happier than he had been in a long time. XXXXXXXXX "This really stinks." Sam whined to Dana. She always just came right out and said what needed to be said. "I know. I don't want to leave." Dana's father just got a new assignment - in California. She looked back at the packed car. Her brothers were saying good-bye to some of their friends, and Fox was hanging around too. "Promise you'll write?" Sam asked. "Every day. I swear." Dana said solemnly. "Ok, take care of yourself." Sam said. They hugged and said good- bye. Dana then turned and saw Fox standing right next to her. She looked up into his eyes, and remembered her prom. "I'll never forget you." Fox put on a lopsided grin. "Parting is such sweet sorrow." he kissed her hand. Dana blushed. Sam nearly laughed. "Dana come on!" Mr. Scully called out. "Bye." Dana said with a parting wave. She got into the car. She did catch a glimpse of Fox. For some strange reason, she knew she'd be seeing him again. XXXXXXXXXX Dana Scully switched her briefcase to the other hand as she rode the elevator down. She was excited to finally meet her new partner, Mulder. But that name was bugging her. She remembered it for some reason. The elevator stopped and the doors opened. She made her way to the basement office she was to share with her partner. Scully knocked timidly. "Nobody in here but the FBI's least wanted." a masculine voice said. Scully smiled. At least he had a sense of humor. She pushed through the door and saw a man sitting with his back to her, looking over some negatives. "Agent Mulder?" she said. The man turned around. Her mouth hung open for a moment as she recognized him. Same unruly brown hair, same hazel eyes. "Fox?" "Dana?" he stood up. Sure enough, it was the petite redhead that had haunted him for so long. XXXXXXXXXX Somewhere, far away. A man smoking a cigarette laughed at some private joke only he knew about.
