She realized she was trapped in her boyfriend's arms and glanced at him over her shoulder. He was sound asleep. And he looked so peaceful... She decided to stay in bed for a while, closed her eyes and started to think back to the day they had first met... ***** Fall 1978 Boston High School When she entered the room, Dana was surprised. She hadn't really known what to expect when she had heard the term "black theatre", she had only thought that theatre would be a good counterweight to her scientific education. But to find that so many people were there... The teacher who was organizing the whole thing told them about the play she was planning on doing and whom she wanted for the main role. Dana didn't get his name, she only saw that he was very small for his age. She didn't know the play either, but it sounded interesting, a novel by some French guy... When they actually started a few days later, she was disillusioned very fast. She didn't know any of the other people, and she'd never been quick to make friends. She shuddered at the thought of her classmates who all hated her. One girl who had been her best friend for two years until they broke up in a huge fight had discredited her with all the others. She hoped to find a few friends in the theatre group, she didn't know where her depression might lead otherwise... But at first it didn't look very hopeful, as nobody wanted to work with her, and on top of that one of the other newbies was a girl from her neighborhood with whom she shared a mutual hate. At last the teacher put her in a group with two boys, one of whom was the one intended to play the main role. And this time she even got his name, his friend called him Billy. 'Billy?' she thought, 'like in William? Like in William Scully Jr.?' He was so unlike her brother, it seemed strange that he should have the same name. But she liked him, for that reason if no other. She quickly understood the concept of black theatre, and when they started working on their first scene, she found out how it worked: They used UV-light that made colored stuff glow while the black one became almost invisible. She couldn't wait to start with their play. It was a cold fall leading to an early winter, and Dana was ill every second week. At first she didn't care much, it was nothing worse than a cold, and she enjoyed the additional time to stay in bed and read, and so she finally read the book the play was based on, but after a few weeks she began to miss the theatre, and soon she realized she was falling in love with Billy. With time passing Dana found out that Billy wasn't just small for his age, he was extremely tiny - considering he was seventeen! He was hardly taller than his sister, who was also a member of the theatre group, but four years younger than him. Dana heard that the two were the children of a teacher at their school, and started to wonder just whose kids they were, but it took her quite some time to find out. A few days before Christmas, they went to see a performance by a professional black theatre ensemble with the whole group, and as they were all supposed to sign the guest book, she finally found out his last name. And she was absolutely shocked. He was the son of her physics teacher! She *hated* her physics teacher! It had been the break, and Dana passed the rest of the time more with staring at Billy than with paying attention to the play. She smiled to herself. She could just look at him for hours without ever getting tired of it. He was indeed *very* small... but who cared? She loved him, that was all that mattered. And he was just so cute! Now that she knew that her physics teacher was Billy's father, it somehow seemed easier to get along with him, and when he even gave her a D at the end of the semester instead of the E she deserved, she was wholly on his side. She had no idea why she was that bad in physics suddenly... maybe her teacher from last year was really as bad as she had always suspected. And maybe she could ask Billy for some help... but she didn't dare that. Anyway it all seemed to get more difficult now that she was in love - she hardly dared to talk to him anymore, and she spent hours and hours musing about how to tell him, or wondering if he might love her too. They spent the whole summer preparing the play, Dana missed not a single rehearsal and was inconsolable when one was canceled - not that anyone would have known she was in need to be consoled, no, she couldn't tell anyone, too much she feared the outcome - to have to face the possibility that he might *not* love her. During this summer, she began to love the story their were preparing as much as the teacher did. The book was called 'The Little Prince', and Dana loved the whole story, but soon became to like one scene especially - one where she spoke the voice of a rose who had to tell the Little Prince - played by Billy - that she loved him. She hated the days when the guy who was the replacement cast played in that scene, but fortunately for her he didn't get along with the teacher and quit way before the performance. I years before, Dana had craved the summer holidays, two month with nothing to do but relax, but that year she feared them. Two month without school meant two month without Billy, and she didn't know how to survive that. Luckily they also had a few rehearsals in the holidays, so the time without him became slightly shorter, and also she couldn't tell how it had happened, suddenly the new school year had begun. Billy had grown slightly and was actually becoming a bit to tall for his role, but with him having rehearsed it for a whole year, it was too late to recast it. Dana tried to get any role where she could be near him, and her favorite one was that of a fox who had to go play with the Little Prince. She nearly fought over that role with another girl who fortunately wanted it for different reasons, and in the end they had to share it. Finally the night of their first performance arrived, which Dana as much awaited as dreaded, as it meant that everything would be over soon. And the worst was, she had a chemistry test scheduled the first lesson on the morning after the first performance, which she simply dreaded. Luckily, the performance went perfectly well, and she had no problems with the test either. The same evening was the next performance, but they were more relaxed this time, as it wasn't anyone's stage debut anymore. Afterwards, they all partied and drank champagne - also Dana actually wasn't allowed to drink it, she couldn't resist. After two glasses she lay flat on her back, on a box they used on stage as a pedestal, with the fox as a pillow. Billy sat on the floor, his chin propped up on the edge of the box, stroking the fox's head. He too had a few glasses down. "Did you know my real name actually is Fox?" he asked in a slurred voice. Dana giggled uncontrollably, "Yeah, suuuure." "No, really," he insisted, with the little bit of conviction he had left in his drunk state. Now Dana laughed, and suddenly she couldn't hold back anymore, also her voice slurred even more than his, "Fox, I love you." He nodded, "Yeah, suuuure." She grinned, "No, really...." and a moment later she was asleep. When she awoke the next morning to a terrible headache, from someone slapping her face, she believed she was already in hell, but then that someone called out, "Dana! Will you the hell wake up!" She realized she was still at school, still on stage, lying in the same spot where she had fallen asleep, and Billy - no, Fox, she reminded herself - was kneeling next to her trying to wake her. She sleepily opened her eyes and mumbled, "Whatcha want?" "Dana, I really need to know this..." his voice sounded urgent. "What?" She still couldn't focus. "Did you mean what you said last night? That you...?" She hardly listened, "Of course I meant it. I always mean what I say." Then it came through to her what he was talking about, and that woke her up fully. She repeated with more conviction, looking into his eyes, "Of course I meant it. Any particular reason why you're asking?" "Yeah. I just wanted to say, ditto." And that was it. A moment later she had her arms around his neck and was kissing him, hardly believing her luck. It didn't matter that he was dripping with sweat from a night in the overheated school, or still smelling of alcohol, as the same was applicable for her, but they really had more important things to think of.... ***** Dana laughed when she thought of that day. It had only been the beginning... the start of a wonderful love. She decided she had reveled in nostalgia long enough and turned around. "Fox William Mulder, will you the hell wake up!" The End!
